#HootTip: Using Custom URL Parameters in #HootSuite

Hoot TipThe HootSuite dashboard is full of features and tools to help you manage social media – and we’re always adding more. To keep you up to date, or just refresh your memory, here’s a new #HootTip about a handy HootSuite feature.

Custom URL Parameters

With many links sent from so many sources, tracking which channels are successfully driving traffic to your website can be difficult. Are customers arriving from Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or from links you’ve placed elsewhere? Which campaigns do they respond to? Which channels perform best for your objectives?

HootSuite provides a handy solution to make tracking your campaigns a breeze. Custom URL Parameters are built right into the dashboard allowing users to create campaign specific URLs for Pro users.

These customized links deliver metrics on exactly how visitors arrived at your site and are viewable as single line items within Google Analytics or Omniture. When paired with standard executive metrics, this information can help track conversions such as sales, signups, and other goals.

By entering parameters, the Ow.ly shortened links will show up as one referrer saving you the time spent counting and compiling data from multiple places within your analytics tool. A simple A/B test allows you to determine which channels are most effective for which types of messages.

Here’s How

  1. Enter your URL in the Link Shortening Box, expand the Ow.ly dropdown menu, and select Custom URL Parameters under the Tools section.
    Track your URLs
  2. Select or create a new preset. If using an existing preset – the parameters and values can be saved and will be automatically populated next time.
    Track your URLs
  3. Fill in the variables.
    • utm_source – referral source (examples: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)
    • utm_medium – the delivery method or social media account (examples: CorporateHelpTweet, CustomerServiceBlogPost, email, banner_ad)
    • utm_campaign – the campaign you’re tracking (examples: SpringPromotion, NewCustomerDiscount or in our example below: SpringMenuLaunch)

    Track your URLs

The HootSuite team understands the importance of measuring the return on social media investment and continues to produce tools to help measure. Have you seen the HootSuite Social Analytics modules? Did you download the White Paper about Measuring Social Media ROI? Like the Custom URL Parameters, these tools were developed to help monitor the effectiveness of your social media marketing efforts.

How do you use Custom URL Parameters? What else do you wish to measure? We’re listening.

Keep an eye out for new #HootTips – they’re short, sweet and Re-Tweetable so you can share your HootSuite expertise with your friends and followers. Some lucky RTers may just find themselves with a #HootKit… It’s our way of saying “thanks for spreading the word.”

Hi Dave,

Has this featured been added as of yet? It's something that I'd love to be able to do via my RSS feed. Features like this are things that would make me consider jumping up to premium.

Cheers,

Oliver

Is there a way you can add variables that can be inserted for the values? For instance, I'd like to insert {{page_name}} in the value for UTM_SOURCE, and have that automatically insert the page name of the Pages or Twitter accounts or Google+ accounts the content is being posted from. This would allow me to tie clickthrough data back to individual Facebook Pages and Twitter accounts.

Hi Jesse,

As far as I can see, this is only available for Google Ads through AdWords. Seems like a great idea though. Suggest it on our Feedback Channel.

Is it possible to make the utm_source token a variable? That will auto populate from the social networks selected? ie. twitter, facebook, and etc. Because now, we are having to create multiple post, to capture the correct social sources.

@Anthony Akin Any word back on this? I'd love to have this feature in @hootsuite

Hi Anthony,

Did someone ever respond to your question to see if this is available? It's something that I would love to know how to do as well.

Cheers,

Oliver

Simply paste the desired Ow.ly link into the message box rather than the shortening box and you'll be good to go.

I have the Pro account but I am not getting the drop down. I have scheduled several tweets for a campaign and although I copy and paste the previous owl.ly link, it regenerates a new one. It's going to be very difficult to track. How can I get the owl.ly to be the same for each set of tweets?

Hi All,

Love this feature. Thank you. Is there anything in the works for customizing a link? Meaning instead of the generically generated link allowing us to use real words (e.g.; http://owl.ly/hoot-is-great)?

Sorry if this is posted anywhere else, I couldn't find it.

Thx, OD

We do offer custom vanity URLs but not custom strings after the domain.

The traceable custom URLs are nothing short of amazing for the purposes for which I use HootSuite. Your whole team is awesome!

I would like a custom "Publish as" feature. So when I publish content to Facebook or Twitter, it would say "via my company".

I would also like to publish to Tumblr from Hootsuite.

I have set up the custom parameters as a default for manual tweets, but I would also like to have the option to set those for those automater through rss feeds. Is that something that could be added? (or have I just not found where to set it up)

That's not possible at this time.
