HootUps ~ Social Media is in Your Town! (Extra Japan, Canada & Guide)

May 10th, 2011

Social media helps us shape our world – from reconnecting with friends and doing business differently, to speaking up against civic and political concerns.

At HootSuite, we are proud to be a part of the great things happening everyday as we near 2 million users.

We also believe that social media is not about replacing the “offline world” but about enhancing it. These tools are about meeting new people, sharing ideas, and connecting in new ways. This is why we encourage HootUps — a fun way to widen your network, talk about your HootSuite skills, spread culture, and make new friends.

Meet The International Owls! HootSuite Profiles for Global Outreach

April 5th, 2011

Owl Around the World

HootSuite all over the World

So much has changed since we first announced the HootSuite Translation Project in August last year. Most notable is that we’ve successfully released French, Italian, Korean and other translations for various apps.

Since launch, we’ve added iPad and BlackBerry to the list of mobile applications and and have localized Spanish and Dutch versions on their way, with German shortly behind. Plus we’ve added a lot of new tools such as Social Analytics and Secure Profiles so it’s fair to say that our tookit has grown too.

So let’s take a closer look at these happy Owls nesting at our headquarters and sending Hoots across the universe!

Japanese

Japanese OwlBack in 2009, @HootSuite_Japan was the first international Owly to say hi to the users in the Land of The Rising Sun. Later we added @HootWatch_Japan to look after the increased mentions and power-users. Japan is a really important part of our community which makes us very concerned about the recent events.

We encourage you to donate to the American Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan or through any of the other reputable channels.

Russian

Russian OwlyThe second international is from Russia. Our community in the Eastern Europe is smaller than in other regions yet very strong.

@HootSuite_RU keeps users updated and connected while providing timely support and sending all the Hootkits rubles can buy.

Spanish

Spanish OwlyFrom Spain to South American countries, people Hoot and they hoot a lot! So we have not only grown our Owl-Quixote, but have also translated Help Desk articles, released several case studies and info sheets –  started blogging a little too.

So, without further ado, say hi to @HootSuite_ES!

Dutch

Dutch OwlyThis is a brand new addition to our family with the mission of connecting with our community in Netherlands who are especially rapid for mobile versions. We’ve had visits from mobile industry emissaries packing several handsets and look forward to spreading the Hootlove wherever Dutch is spoken.

Please, warmly welcome @HootSuite_NL!

Many more

Besides the owls described above, we are prepared to talk to fans in other regions too via these emerging channels:

@HootSuite_FR for Francophones from Montreal to Tahiti (as well as France)

@HootSuite_PT for savvy Brazilians and Portuguese social media fans

@HootSuite_Korea for the voracious geeks in Republic of Korea (as well as anyone who can connect from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea)

@HootSuite_IT which is awaiting take-off to serve the Italians… who are no doubt waiting with fine wine in hand

Of course we need your help to roll out the localized versions. Translators are stars to us here at the multi-cultural HootSuite HQ and we are pleased to send the top contributors HootKits full of treats. So please take a bit of time to translate and be a champion to us and your countryfolk.

Also, don’t forget to check out our full HootSuite family list to see all the official @HootSuite Twitter accounts to keep an eye on. Bonus: Need more Owly? Check out this “just for fun” Life of Owly Tumblr blog.

HootSuite Translation Project Update ~ Which bird will fly first?

September 25th, 2010

The HootSuite Translation Project is running at full-speed now. The translation volunteers are simply amazing, as you can see in the top contributors list at the bottom of the page. Many languages are close to completion and now we are bringing in the language coordinators.

The folks here in Vancouver and across the world are paying attention and following the leaderboard to see which languages will be released first. Here are a few notes and refinements we’ve made to help the contributions keep flowing.

Owls for the World

The HootSuite designers are working on some international Owls to celebrate the upcoming releases. On the drawing board, Owly wearing traditional outfits which we think you’ll really enjoy.

Which bird will fly first? The Tour de France inspired bird? Or the Roman-eque statue? Or the samba-ready Brazilian owl?

Translation Guide

To answer your translation related questions, we’ve posted a series of help articles including a detailed Translator’s Guide which discusses:

  • working with adopted words
  • remarks about product names & trademarks
  • notes on style, tone and context

We’ve also included a brief “Terms of Use” so there is no confusion.

Constantly Growing

that was fast!In advance of an upcoming release next week, we’ve added more words to the project which need to be translated — this means a bit more work but also means the international versions will be as up-to-date as the native English version.

We’ve also introduced “placeholders” for variables to make the best possible experience for every localization. These strings can be a bit confusing so please check out the placeholders help article.

Access Changes

Translators will notice some differences to the permissions structure. Now, any registered contributor can suggest translations, but only coordinators can review the terms for inclusion. We hope this will ensure consistency across the languages.

Now that we’ve made these adjustments, we’ll be appointing coordinators and finishing up projects to launch. While many people have volunteered to coordinate common languages, you can still apply to oversee a language if you have experience and time.

Talk to Each Other

We invite you to discuss any project-related topics and meet other translators in the new Translation Project Forum. Many questions are answered in the Help Articles. If you need help or advice related to the Translation Project and can’t find an answer in the forum or the help articles, we can assist you at the Help Desk (be sure to choose “Translation” from the menu) with your question, suggestion or ideas.

International Owls Playing Friendly ~ News Round-up

July 9th, 2010

Global Owl

HootSuite is truly an international social media dashboard and we love it that way. Why? Because we find fulfillment from seeing the actions and activities of users all over the world who are helping one another learn how to use the social web to spread messages to audiences from anywhere.

We’re working on providing more people a personalized experience in their own language with translation and localization on both iPhone and web versions for HootSuite which is exciting enough to celebrate on your vuvuzela.

While we keep working at our tasks, here’s a fresh news round-up with a sampling of what people are saying about HootSuite in their countries to peruse while you watch the finals of the FIFA World Cup — after which Twitter traffic may even return to “normal.”

The original posts are translated from the native languages using the wonders of Google Translate to give you the gist of what they say.

Let’s get going:

TwitterSmash (Germany) – HootSuite im Unternehmen

HootSuite in the company – This post comes from Germany and the author describes why they have chosen to use HootSuite. They go through the advantages (Vorteile) and disadvantages (Nachteile) of the social media dashboard. Danke for the feedback.

Descary.com (French Canadian) – HootSuite5, l’un des meilleurs tableaux de bord pour réseaux sociaux

HootSuite5, one of the best dashboards for social networks – Benoit Descary is from Montreal and writes that he wasn’t the biggest fan of HootSuite until the introduction of HootSuite5. He goes on to describe many of the new features in the HootSuite5 release and calls HootSuite “a true dashboard for social networks.” Merci Benoit!

Internet Watch (Japanese) – Twitterウェブクライアント「HootSuite」が日本語化、HTML5対応の新機能も

Twitter web client “HootSuite” of Japanese language , HTML5 support new features – Japanese users are excited about the localized version for their language and in this article, they extol the virtues of HTML 5 including “drag and drop” ability and improved performance along with the Japanese-i-fication.

Midia boom (Portuguese) – HootSuite | Nova interface em Html5 e recursos aprimorados para Redes Sociais

HootSuite | New interface and enhanced features in HTML5 for Social Networks – In this post, Chico Montenegro writes about some of the new features such as geo-location and themes from the HootSuite 5 update. We hope this is helpful for HootSuite fans in Brazil.

GeeksRoom (Spanish) – GeeksRoom Review: HOOTSUITE renovado: Lo bueno, lo maluco y lo pésimo

GeeksRoom Review: HootSuite renovated: The good and the badIn this frank review of the HootSuite 5 update, Eduardo Wheeler writes that he likes the improved profile view, the themes, as well as the not so new scheduling feature.

Eduardo balances the good feedback with the bad and mentions a few other things that he would like to see improved. In the end, Eduardo remains a daily user and recommends HootSuite to professionals managing multiple social media accounts.

elNuevavodia (Spanish) – No dejes que la tecnología te esclavice

Do not let technology enslave you – In this provocatively titled post, Leanne Italie shares life-hacking productivity tips from former Google exec and congnitive scientist Douglas C. Merrill incuding using HootSuit to manage your social interactions so they don’t get out of control and control your day. Not much about HootSuite but interesting nonetheless.

TechVibes – Hootsuite’s Vorsprung durch Technik

Techically written in English but TechVibes’ Jeffery Simpson has some fun with Google Translate in writing about HootSuite’s localization: Forgive Babel Fish’s shoddy German, but it just did not feel right to title a post about the addition of localization support to Twitter manager extraordinaire HootSuite without at least trying to make it multilingual.  Localization support for Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and German joins the previous translation services that the application offered in its last update.
