Meet The International Owls! HootSuite Profiles for Global Outreach

April 5th, 2011

Owl Around the World

HootSuite all over the World

So much has changed since we first announced the HootSuite Translation Project in August last year. Most notable is that we’ve successfully released French, Italian, Korean and other translations for various apps.

Since launch, we’ve added iPad and BlackBerry to the list of mobile applications and and have localized Spanish and Dutch versions on their way, with German shortly behind. Plus we’ve added a lot of new tools such as Social Analytics and Secure Profiles so it’s fair to say that our tookit has grown too.

So let’s take a closer look at these happy Owls nesting at our headquarters and sending Hoots across the universe!

Japanese

Japanese OwlBack in 2009, @HootSuite_Japan was the first international Owly to say hi to the users in the Land of The Rising Sun. Later we added @HootWatch_Japan to look after the increased mentions and power-users. Japan is a really important part of our community which makes us very concerned about the recent events.

We encourage you to donate to the American Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan or through any of the other reputable channels.

Russian

Russian OwlyThe second international is from Russia. Our community in the Eastern Europe is smaller than in other regions yet very strong.

@HootSuite_RU keeps users updated and connected while providing timely support and sending all the Hootkits rubles can buy.

Spanish

Spanish OwlyFrom Spain to South American countries, people Hoot and they hoot a lot! So we have not only grown our Owl-Quixote, but have also translated Help Desk articles, released several case studies and info sheets –  started blogging a little too.

So, without further ado, say hi to @HootSuite_ES!

Dutch

Dutch OwlyThis is a brand new addition to our family with the mission of connecting with our community in Netherlands who are especially rapid for mobile versions. We’ve had visits from mobile industry emissaries packing several handsets and look forward to spreading the Hootlove wherever Dutch is spoken.

Please, warmly welcome @HootSuite_NL!

Many more

Besides the owls described above, we are prepared to talk to fans in other regions too via these emerging channels:

@HootSuite_FR for Francophones from Montreal to Tahiti (as well as France)

@HootSuite_PT for savvy Brazilians and Portuguese social media fans

@HootSuite_Korea for the voracious geeks in Republic of Korea (as well as anyone who can connect from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea)

@HootSuite_IT which is awaiting take-off to serve the Italians… who are no doubt waiting with fine wine in hand

Of course we need your help to roll out the localized versions. Translators are stars to us here at the multi-cultural HootSuite HQ and we are pleased to send the top contributors HootKits full of treats. So please take a bit of time to translate and be a champion to us and your countryfolk.

Also, don’t forget to check out our full HootSuite family list to see all the official @HootSuite Twitter accounts to keep an eye on. Bonus: Need more Owly? Check out this “just for fun” Life of Owly Tumblr blog.

Scheduling for Success: Obama tweets via HootSuite

February 4th, 2011

Hoo’s Hooting

HootSuite Owly gives a speechIn this news round-up, we’re following the buzz of the many taste-makers and influencers from around the world who have found different uses for the tools in the HootSuite dashboard.

We’ll start in the Oval Office with US President Obama who Tweeted via HootSuite‘s scheduling function during his State of the Union Address. Plus, we’ll recap some of the other curious Owls who wrote about the dashboard this week, including articles from Social Media Examiner and Experience Farm.

Hoots from the ‘House

Last week the USA  – and anyone watching *elsewhere* – got a double-dose of Obama. While he gave his State of the Union address, he also posted updates on Twitter using HootSuite and the hashtag #sotu for easy searching.

Tweet from Obama during State of the Union Address

Were you wondering how he could Tweet and speak at the same time? You’re not the only one.

Obama tweets with HootSuite

The scheduling and team assignment tools in the HootSuite dashboard are ideal for time-sensitive – and event-specific conversations – on the social web. The LA Times noticed too, have a look:

LA Times – Social media wrap: Obama retweets his own Iraq speech

The president tweeted four times after his 19-minute address — all via automatic tweet feeder HootSuite — the most interesting of which was:

“There were patriots who supported this war and who opposed it. We are united in appreciation for our troops and our hope for Iraq’s future.”

Constant Contact - 6 Reasons to Schedule Your Social Media Life with HootSuite

HootSuite and Constant Contact  have a cool collaboration going with the Social Share tool which helps  broadcast to even wider audiences – and we’re working together to find even more ways to combine social media into your email campaigns. In this post Jason Meserve shares some scheduling tipsfor their audience of savvy marketers:

It’s 11 p.m. and you just thought of a great tweet or Facebook post. But if you post it now, your customers or members who are about to head to bed may miss it. With HootSuite, a Constant Contact partner and one of my favorite real-time social media tools, you can create a post when the creativity strikes and schedule it to go out at a time when your fans andfollowers are most likely to see it.

The ability to schedule my social media updates is just one of many reasons I love HootSuite and use it every day. Here are some others:

  • It’s web-based, so you can access your account from any Internet-connected computer and all your social media information will be there.
  • It supports multiple social networks: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Ping.fm, WordPress, MySpace, and Foursquare. No wonder HootSuite calls itself the Social Media Dashboard!
  • You can manage multiple social network accounts via a single HootSuite login, meaning no longer having to login to one Twitter account at a time or have separate browser windows or tabs open.
  • The tabbed interface makes it easy to move between social network accounts and quickly schedule updates for all the accounts you oversee in a matter of minutes.
  • You can post the same update to multiple networks all at the same time.
  • You can get great reporting data about how many people clicked on your Twitter links, which will show you how compelling your content is and what your followers find most interesting.

Talking Freemium

HootSuite is available as both a Basic (free) or a premium (Pro) plan giving users a choice the best tool-set to suit their needs. This hybrid is called Freemium, and here are some posts all about how our business works:

5by5 - Founders Talk #10: Ryan Holmes, Founder of HootSuite

HootSuite CEO, Ryan Holmes weighs in on the development of HootSuite in this handy and informative podcast. Take some time over your next lunch break to learn more about the the story behind HootSuite with this in-depth interview with this wise Owl.

Social Media Examiner – Is HootSuite Pro a Smart Investment?

social media tools

The article really got people talking. Be sure to check out all the comments from the folks that offered up their thoughts, and the responses from the friendly owls at HootSuite HQ — we always enjoy talking with others about the dashboard, so post your comment too!

Writer Nichole Kelly caught the power of the Custom URL Parameters and explained how this data can “close the loop” by showing the payoff from a company’s social efforts:

This is a game-changer for tracking return on investment (ROI). It certainly has its limitations in that you must have some mechanism for conversion on your site that you can use to evaluate sales, whether it’s lead forms or actual online orders.

hootsuite analyticsFor service businesses, lead forms will likely be the only way you can measure sales interest using the campaign integration feature, but that’s far better than what we’ve had access to in the past.

From a cost standpoint, I think HootSuite Pro is reasonable with their $5.99 per month charge, and while I would prefer to have two levels of users to avoid the $15 per month per user charge for all of our users, with a corporate budget it isn’t unreasonable. This is certainly a nice entry point for businesses that are looking to have ROI-level measurement capability without dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars for costly systems integrations and custom developmen

They included a quote from Ryan summing up the tool:

Ryan Holmes, CEO of HootSuite, said, “We designed HootSuite to be a comprehensive dashboard for agencies, enterprises and consultants using social media to monitor brands, manage campaigns and analyze results. We’ve integrated with the leading social networks – including TwitterFacebook and LinkedIn– and now look forward to adding mash-ups through our API as well as adding more reports which business users seek.”

Bootup Entrepreneurial Society – Social Marketing Kung Fu, White Belt with Dave Olson

HootSuite Community Director Dave Olson recently conducted a mentoring session with emerging entrepreneurs at Bootup Garage to provide some intro tips and quick-start techniques for social marketing. Maura and Sonya put it all in a helpful post summarizing Dave’s tips:

  • Create Lists.  Start following the people who care about your product as well as watching your competitors.
  • By listening and asking specific questions, you will start to build relationships with your customers.
  • Respond and participate in the conversation.
  • Each community is different. For example, your customers may act differently on Facebook vs. Linked In. Watch this and communicate accordingly.
  • When someone writes an article or post mentioning you or your area of expertise, COMMENT. It shows you are paying attention and care about your community and the people, who are taking the time to write about you and use your product.
  • Create 3-4 touchpoints to an article.  For example, Dave will comment on an article, social bookmark it and add it to an RSS Feed = juicy, indexable goodness.
  • Hashtag everything. Topics, brands, acronyms – be creative and always remember to listen to your audience and be consistent with your message.

French and Italian Owls Hatched ~ HootSuite Translation Update

November 25th, 2010

Mais oui, nos amis, c’est vrais. The French Owl is here, and the Italian Owl is flying too! La dolce vita.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce the release of the first two crowd-sourced international owls. Thanks to the Translation Project that has been in the works for a few months now, HootSuite web is now available in French and Italian. It’s not “perfect” but you can help the new versions improve with your linguistic skills.

From Morocco to Montreal — and the official language of HootSuite’s homeland — French has always been a front-runner in the translation efforts of HootSuite fans. In its turn, Italian for HootSuite came up unexpectedly fast and finished strong. Now Owls up and down the “boot” can hoot in their lovely language (now if only we could turn this into a trip to Positano…).

Grazie, Merci

We’re over the moon that HootSuite enthusiasts around the whole world have so enthusiastically contributed to the Translation project. We’d like to thank every translator who participated to help made this happen. In the short while since released, over 30,000 words were translated from English to French and Italian — that’s a whole lot of hoots.

We can’t help but wonder how all this could ever have happened without our incredible language coordinators Olivier Devriese (French) and Michele Catalano (Italian) who lovingly reviewed and submitted hundreds of strings in just a short time. And they weren’t alone — here are some of the other contributors that have helped bring this to life:

Top 3 French Translators

  1. @odevriese — Olivier Devriese is our awesome language coordinator, who not only checked hundreds of strings but contributed thousands of words himself. From his own words, “After having translated many strings, I noticed that there were very few participants to do the [coordinator's] job. That’s why I decided to become a coordinator. I am persevering ;-).” He also says, “I hope that the French version will create a French-speaking community for HootSuite,” and we hope so too!
  2. @iPhoneaddictfr — Cédric Calisti, the author of iPhoneAddict.fr, writes about iPhones and other Apple products and uses HootSuite to manage his social media accounts.
  3. @bchamontin — Benoit Chamontin is a communication consultant (and a HootSuite fan).

Top 3 Italian Translators

  1. @marcotrulla — Marco Trulla, Owl enthusiast.
  2. @LeoPatrizi — Leonardo Patrizi is a passionate photographer. Check out his pictures on Flickr.
  3. @ps3udolus — Michele Catalano is our great language coordinator who’s been passionate about the Translation Project from day one: “Before now many users who had difficulty with English were inhibited using the application. Now with locations in several languages as the Italian one, the spread of HootSuite will rise and many others can use the potential of this fantastic application,” he says.

Internation-owls

So what’s next? Now with HootSuite now available in 4 languages, it won’t be long until the next localizations round goes live.

Right now, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese look promising on the leaderboard, but there are other translators close on their heels. The Dutch and German users seem to be getting pretty serious… more and more owls land at HootSuite daily from frankwatching.com site and other supportive posts.

Take a look at the latest leaderboard below:

Owl in the Family

Russian Owly

The HootSuite Translation Project has been a successful example of community crowd-sourcing. We’re grateful to our fans, and it’s been a lot of fun to connect with HootSuite users from around the world.

Inspired by the the amount of support for our community crowd-sourcing, we started a broader international outreach and support community: @HootSuite_Korea, @HootSuite_RU (Russian/Ukrainian) and @HootSuite_ES (Spanish) are set to join the already famous Japanese Owly, keeping HootSuite fans around the world informed, supported and satisfied.

While these languages are yet to be 100% completed, there already are a few fully translated apps, including iPhone and Blackberry. We’re expecting to release these very soon on various mobile owls including a few wildcards (Turkish anyone?).

As the translation project continues, our designers are working hard on creating more custom owls for everyone. So follow @HootWatch and #HootTrans for more news and announcements.

Social Skills ~ New HootSuite iPhone Release Helps Clear your Mind

June 2nd, 2010

Designed to Simplify

HootSuite keeners likely noticed a handful of new features for HootSuite iPhone released recently including language localization and a batch of handy tools which allow you to forward Twitter messages by email and save links to Instapaper. But this was only part one of the “Elf Owl” release.

Today, you can fill your toolbox with even more goodies designed to make social media experience more efficient and enjoyable. Ahhh … feels better already doesn’t it?

Social Media ManagementGet Your Fingers Working

HootSuite for iPhone update is available at the iTunes App store in Lite (no-cost) and Full ($2.99 USD) versions. Follow @HootSuiteiPhone for updates.

Internationally Comfortable

4 Languages for HootSuite on iPhone

We know it’s nice to see an interface in your own language so we added full localization for Japanese, German, Spanish and Portuguese speakers.

Users will see all interface elements including options, settings and basic functions translated so no more fumbling to figure it out.

The localization is an industry-first for a Twitter iPhone app — including Twitter’s official app (formerly Tweetie) — and reflects Twitters rapid growth in markets beyond the US.

Which languages would you like to see localized next? Add your thoughts at the Feedback channel.

Translate Twitter with HootSuite iPhone

Handier Translation

The localization is a great addition to the translation tools which interpret to/from 50+ languages. Extra useful for monitoring brand sentiment which is critical for social-savvy marketers who must be aware of public opinion to amplify messages or prevent PR blunders.

Plus, now a single click translates foreign messages into your phone’s default language so you can get the gist of what your customers from Thailand to Timbuktu think about you, your brand, or your industry.

Fun: Try translating comments from rival team’s fans during the upcoming World Cup matches ;-).

Clear your Mind

Whether you are reading Twitter and Facebook for business or pleasure, you want to interact with your social streams efficiently. Some people call this “getting things done” but we call it “simply handy.” Meet some of the new tools the mobile owls sprinkled in to clear your mind — many of which were submitted by HootSuite enthusiasts through the feedback channel.

iPhone with HootSuite FeaturesConversational Context
Don’t let replies confuse you – know the original context of conversations from days before with threaded messages arranged chronologically in chat-like bubbles.

Facebook Comments
Easily participate in the conversation by commenting on anything on your Facebook News Feed — along with posting messages to Facebook Pages and Profiles.

Keep your Place
HootSuite remembers your position and places you right back in the stream so no more re-reading to find your place when you take a phone call or use another App.

Saved as a Draft
Need more info for your update? Interrupted while typing? Save your message as a draft and finish it up later at your leisure without starting from scratch.

Read it Later
Don’t want to read an article right away? Just click to save links to the (free) Instapaper service to save for future reading on the big screen when you have the time.

Email that Tweet
Want to share a message with someone not using Twitter? Send any micro-update by email to share the news with bosses or pals to bring them into the conversation.

Remember to Bump
Released a few weeks ago in HootSuite Labs, the “Bump to Follow” tool is gaining fans in noisy clubs and quiet rooms alike who follow by “bumping” phones. Try it ~ but hold on to your phone!

Spreading the Word

HootSuite isn’t in the league of Ichiro, Godzilla or Spinal Tap in Japan… but we’re getting there. CEO Ryan Holmes recently visited Nippon to show off the localized iPhone at numerous events including speaking at Open Network Labs Live event, meeting users at a Tweetup, attending a Maker Faire, plus talking tech with the CEO of Softbank — Japan’s largest “keitei” mobile phone provider.

Curious? Catch the recaps of Ryan’s journey to Japan including pics, vids, and interviews.

While not quite as “exotic” as Tokyo, Community Director Dave Olson spoke about community building and shared HootSuite power-tuning tips in Bellingham, Washington plus hosted a mobile-industry trade mission visiting Vancouver from the Netherlands.

Stay up with all the HootSuite news and recaps here on the HootSuite blog and by following @hootwatch as well at @hootsuite and @hootsuite_help.
