USA Twitter Trends of the Week, Vol 86

With hundreds of millions of daily tweets and search inquiries in the United States alone, Twitter is rich with conversations and news updates. Our USA Twitter Trends of the Week captures the top trending discussions and breaks them down for you.

Top Overall Twitter Trend of the Week: Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Lingerie, beautiful women, and drooling guys… yes the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is back. Televised on Tuesday night, more than 185 countries watched as 35 of Victoria Secret’s sexiest Angel’s showed off their wings. If there is one thing I know about Twitter, babes in lingerie will surely get some attention. Taylor Swift knocked Twitterers off their seats with her outstanding performance, as did Model Candice Swanepoel by wearing this year’s $10 million dollar Fantasy Bra designed by Mouawad.

While many around the country were loving it, some people felt a little differently about the event:

Top Entertainment: Godzilla Trailer

This week much of the entertainment talk on Twitter focused on a trailer for a remake of the classic monster film, Godzilla (starring Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen). Within two days of the trailer’s release it had almost topped 10 million views. The two-minute trailer starts out with a mysterious army mission and men parachuting into a devastated city. Suddenly, there are shots of people running, a giant foot crashing through a train carriage and a gaping hole in the middle of a skyscraper.

The movie (coming out May 2014) may rely more on psychological horror than special effects. Keep an eye out for more Godzilla, as I’m sure we’ll be hearing about it in the upcoming months:

Top News: Alex Morgan Engaged

Twitterers sent messages of jealous sadness this week, after U.S. women’s national soccer team star Alex Morgan announced her engagement to Servando Carrasco of the MLS’s Houston Dynamo. Morgan shared an image on Instagram Monday evening of herself and Carrasco celebrating their engagement with a glass of champagne… and the hashtag #instabling (girls, check out that ring).

Top Tech News: Facebook Joins S&P 500

Facebook shares were in the spotlight again, after the social media giant joined the S&P 500, Reuters reports. The stock was up 4.3 per cent after Standard & Poor’s said on Wednesday that Facebook would be joining its S&P 500 stock index.

The news is another illustration of the social media networks’ growth into one of the most powerful companies in the US. This news came after Facebook reported its fourth straight profitable quarter in October, one of the criteria that S&P uses to determine eligibility for the index.
