There are over 300 million tweets sent from around the world every day. Because Twitter has become such a major source for global news and conversations, we pull weekly Twitter trends to discover what the world is talking about. Here are some of the highlights:
April Fools ~ Google Maps Pokemon Challenge
April Fools day has come and gone, but something awesome is still hanging around Google Maps for users that joined in on the fun on April 1st. This year, Google Maps decided on a prank that was a total throwback to 2000’s gaming. Google released a new “job ad” explaining that the person chosen would be named ultimate Pokemon Master and awarded a position at Google. While we are all a little bit disappointed that this listing isn’t actually real, we do get to relive childhood in the mobile app game where you win by catching 150 Pokemon placed all over the globe.
Twitterers were thrilled to hear news of this game, and quickly started sharing screen shots and locations of found Pokemon within Google Maps. Now that April 1st has passed, anyone who went into the app and found more than 5 Pokemon still has the option to play until they Catch ‘Em All.

Fort Hood Shooting
A gunman opened fire on Wednesday at Fort Hood military base in Killeen, Texas. Four people were killed in the incident (one of them being the shooter) and 16 others were injured. The news initially broke on social media, and left people across the United States taking to Twitter with messages of “not again.” Less than 5 years ago, 13 people were killed and another 32 wounded in a 2009 mass shooting by another soldier stationed at Fort Hood.
Many sent messages of hope and prayers to those involved at the military base, while many others retweeted and sent out news of the event- informing fellow citizens of the situation.
Be AWARE!! If you are in the Ft. Hood Post area there is an on-going active shooter. Take shelter immediately and monitor media.

Earthquake in Chile
A massive 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Northern Chile on Tuesday, causing small landslides and creating a tsunami. 5 people died in the incident, and 300 prisoners escaped from a women’s facility in the city of Iquique in the aftermath of the quake. There have been numerous reports of strong aftershocks that have cut off communications in many of the affected areas. Many residents of surrounding port cities have left the sea-level city streets and headed to higher ground. Around 500 people were killed in 2010 when an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile, causing a tsunami that toppled buildings.
“Many people are fearful after experiencing the powerful earthquake in 2010, so they immediately fled for higher ground when they heard the tsunami warning,” said Fabrizio Guzman, World Vision emergency communications manager in Chile.

How I Met Your Mother Series Finale
The season finale of How I Met Your Mother left fans asking “Seriously, did that really just happen?” Without giving any spoilers, fans who had been watching the show for all 9 seasons left feeling a little disappointed and a little upset. Twitterers discussed the show and it’s sour ending on social media. After all the hype, the goodbyes and the sadness, maybe we can forget about the ending by just thinking about the rest, it was legen— wait for it…

Can we all agree the #HIMYMFinale was an April Fool’s joke and have a do-over? Yes, I’m still mad about it.

We’ve made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament, leaving #1 seed Florida Gators taking on the #7 seed UConn Huskies and the #2 seed Wisconsin Badgers versus #8 Kentucky Wildcats. While UConn and Wisconsin are a number 7 and 8 seed respectively, each comes with a championship under their belt within the past 4 seasons. Florida has the top seed of the tournament, and they’ve been playing like it by taking their winning streak to 30 games. We’ll have to wait and see what happens Saturday, but this Championship game is shaping up to be a great one.
Each of the teams has been all over Twitter posting images and sharing their excitement with their fans and followers.
