Twitter announced that as of August 3rd, Fleets will no longer be available on the platform.
Similar to Instagram Stories, Fleets were Twitter’s take on ephemeral content that disappeared 24 hours after it was posted.
According to Twitter, the number of users interested in using the feature was lower than expected.
Fleets were designed as a tool of expression for users who hold back from traditional Tweeting. But Twitter’s analysis found that the feature was mostly used by users already active on the platform. Moving forward, Twitter will look for new ways to activate users whose anxieties hold them back from starting and participating in conversations.
The panel on top of the Twitter feed, previously populated by Fleets, will now serve as placement for Spaces.
