How to use WordPress with HootSuite

January 6th, 2010

Add some punch to your social media experience by integrating WordPress with HootSuite. It’s simple and hassle-free. Like an uppercut, HootSuite makes blogging that much more powerful.

Watch the tutorial video above and see why owls are the Bruce Lee of the bird world.

Initial support is for blogs hosted on WordPress.com, but support for self-hosted WordPress blogs is on the horizon.

UPDATE: We’ve had a number of users report that when they try to add their WordPress.com account into HootSuite it pulls back the wrong blog name and avatar. The cause for this has been identified and WordPress has resolved the issue for us. In case anyone is concerned, there was no way for users to post messages to the wrong blog, it was only an issue with the returned display name and avatar. Everything should be working fine now.

A new year means new features! First up? We’ve added support for WordPress blogs. As with Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, you can schedule and cross-post content to multiple WordPress accounts. There is also a Home Feed for blogs you are following, as well as the ability to reblog posts you think are noteworthy. WordPress is the first blog platform officially supported by HootSuite, and we are very excited about the addition of this brand new feature. Initial support is for blogs hosted on WordPress.com, but support for self-hosted WordPress blogs is on the horizon.

Trending Topics Demystified

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why is that topic trending?!” We have — which is why we now offer explanations for why particular topics trend. Our iPhone app users have already been enjoying this feature; now our web users can check it out too. From now on, you can demystify the trending topics with the simple click of a button. (Move your cursor into the Search field to see the trending topics, and then hit the question mark.)

Link & Media Previews

We’ve also added the ability to preview URLs, so you can easily see what media is being shared. Preview your URLs, as well as most popular shortened URLs, including image-sharing sites like twitpic and ow.ly, YouTube videos, and more. The media preview feature has the added benefit of making your web surfing experience safer, by allowing you to see what you’re clicking on before you do so.

Auto-load more tweets

By popular request, we’ve also eliminated the need to click “More” to view more tweets. HootSuite now automatically loads more tweets when you scroll down to the base of a column. This works for any column, from your DM inbox to your Facebook home feed.

Check out the apps and plug-in directory

Take HootSuite to the next level with value-packed applications and plug-ins. Options for iPhone, Firefox, Chrome, Prism, Fluid and more. Check it out here.

This month, we’ve released our iPhone app to much fanfare. Through all this, our goal is to be your go-to professional social media dashboard.

Thank you to Mashable for hosting this award, to everybody who voted for us, and to users such as yourselves for inspiring us to make the Best Twitter App!

How HootSuite helps your images go viral

September 25th, 2009
If a picture is worth a thousand words, it deserves at least a comment or three. A few weeks ago HootSuite unveiled image sharing and file uploading. (See post here). As of today, HootSuite now allows you to comment on any shared picture or uploaded document; not only that, but now you can attach photos or documents to your comments.

All comments you leave are tweeted out to your Twitter stream, with a link back to the original image or document.  Any photos or documents that are attached as comments will generate their own ow.ly link, so you can comment on those as well.

What’s really cool? If an image or document is attached as a comment, it will show “This is a reply to an image by @username” at the top of the ow.ly page.

To manage your files and comments, simply sign in to ow.ly with your Twitter login. Comments can be up to 300 characters on ow.ly. When sent to Twitter, your message will be truncated to 140 characters, and will include a link to the original comment.

Why is this so exciting? Because this feature has massive potential to greatly increase the viral activity of any image shared or file uploaded.

Let the comments fly!

HootSuite recovers from Twitter’s DOS attack, some early upgrade info

August 14th, 2009
Hello Hootsuite users,

We’ve been busy since we opened up early upgrades to Hootsuite 2.0, responding to questions, listening to your ideas, working out kinks, and dealing with a major denial of service attack on Twitter.

Some of you have noticed some glitches with your columns for search terms and groups. We have implemented some improvements on our end, and Twitter has assured us that we can expect to have everything working on their end by Monday. Check out the Twitter Blog page for more info on the attack and Twitter’s response.

Also, a reminder: If you’re not one of the thousands that has already done so, you’re still invited to tweet for an optional early upgrade to Hootsuite 2.0. Soon, we’ll be opening Hootsuite 2.0 to everyone, with no upgrade tweet required. The choice is yours: tweet your love, and get all the features of HootSuite 2.0 today, or wait a little bit and get them later.

Finally, thanks to everyone who has taken the time to check out HootSuite 2.0 and provide us with your thoughts and ideas. Here’s one of our favourites.

Ping-tastic: Ping.fm integration is here!

April 7th, 2009

You asked for it… and here it is: We just introduced Ping.fm integration on HootSuite.com.

What’s Ping.fm? Think of it as your social network glue.

A Ping.fm account lets you send a single update to multiple networks simultaneously: Facebook, Wordpress, MySpace, LinkedIn, and more. And now you’re able to send those updates through HootSuite to take advantage of scheduling, clickthrough stats, and all the sweet goodness HootSuite has to offer.

Here’s how it works:

1) Sign up for Ping.fm:

2) Hook all your social networks up to Ping.fm:

(Don’t worry about adding your Twitter account to Ping.fm — HootSuite will handle your Twitter updates.)

3) Add some custom triggers to Ping.fm, if you like.

Triggers let you specify a subset of social network accounts that you’d like to post to. For example, you could create a trigger called “status” and have that trigger only send updates to Facebook and GTalk, for example.

4) In HootSuite, as an admin, click on “Settings.” At the bottom of the “Account” tab, you’ll see a Ping.fm section.

5) Paste in your application key, and add a trigger if you like. (If you leave the trigger field blank, it’ll try to send to all your Ping.fm networks.)

6) Choose which Twitter profiles should send data to Ping.fm.

…And that’s it! Any tweets sent from the selected Twitter profiles will be sent to Ping.fm.

This is an early release of this feature, and we’re super excited about the possibilities.

A few things to be aware of:

* DMs are not sent to Ping.fm. Any tweets starting with “d username” or “dm username” are considered DMs.

* Any RSS feeds you’ve set up in HootSuite will not be sent to Ping.fm. This helps us avoid issues where a Ping.fm-enabled blog is linked via RSS to HootSuite, which sends to Ping.fm, which sends to HootSuite… eventually destroying the Internet.

* Your tweets are sent to Twitter by HootSuite, then sent to Ping.fm. If you have your Twitter account linked to Ping.fm, don’t worry — we won’t send to any Twitter accounts linked through Ping.fm. This helps avoid duplicate postings.

* We’re not currently parsing the tweet itself for triggers. Ping.fm’s API requires triggers and message text sent separately. Rather than worry about parsing on our end, you’ll need to set up a trigger through the Settings page if you want to use one.

We’ve already got some ideas about how we might improve Ping.fm integration… here are a few things we’re considering:

  1. Allowing you to select a trigger for each tweet — so you can more easily control where your messages are going on a per-tweet basis.
  2. Allowing you to set up multiple Ping.fm keys (for example, if certain Twitter profiles should send updates to one Ping.fm account, and others should send updates to another).
  3. More-better-izing. =)

Your feedback is, as always, much appreciated!

HootSuite introduces RSS feeds

February 2nd, 2009

Could it be time to say goodbye to Twitterfeed? HootSuite can now send an automatic ‘New Blog Post’ tweet, with your blogs link attached. Add as many RSS feeds as you like, and send ‘em out over multiple Twitter profiles at once. Each tweet from your RSS feed gets its own ow.ly URL, so you can track click-throughs on every new blog post you tweet about. Best part of all? It’s super simple use. How cool is that?

Here’s a quick YouTube video on using HootSuite as your RSS feed:

Customer Service Via Twitter

December 9th, 2008

Posted by Jenn Lowther

Twitter is an immensely useful tool for both personal and professional communication and interaction. Its been fascinating watching the growth of twitter over the past year and seeing the many ways that both people and businesses have begun utilize it. One of the best ways that twitter has been adopted – from a business point of view – is as a tool for customer service.

Twitter, by its very nature, is a digital soap box for people to talk about what’s important to them at any moment of the day. It’s the ideal platform to use when you are happy or upset with a company to voice your pleasure or vent your frustration. Thanks to swift organic growth and the underlying transparency and simplicity of the system, Twitter has become an ideal tool to use for customer service.

Twitter allows you to track what your customers are saying about your brand in real time – no other medium gives you such immediate and unfiltered response from people who are using your product or service. This represents a perfect opportunity for companies to interject into these conversations and either cement the positive brand experience or to rectify any issues that were encountered.

When we launched HootSuite, we actively used twitter as one of our main avenues to hear what our users were saying and how they were using HootSuite. By using twitter, we were able to follow what people were saying about our service, deal with any issues that cropped up surrounding our launch, update people as to the status of new features, and actively engage in conversations with people that were interested in our product. This allowed us to get a real time feel of how our users were using HootSuite and what features they wanted to see implemented. We took this information and included it into our development process, allowing us to give our users a product that they really wanted to use. We’re not alone in using twitter for this purpose, the following are companies currently using twitter for customer service:

Southwest Airlines

Dell Computers

Comcast

Starbucks

Jet Blue

Home Depot

Whole Foods

H&R Block

Zappos

Kodak

General Motors

Pandora

To augment the above list of large companies that use twitter for customer service, we put a quick call out on twitter to see who else is using twitter and the following companies/organizations responded:

Your Sole (Orthopedic Insoles)

Paper Check (Essay Editing and Proofreading Services)

I Can Has Cheezeburger

Fail Blog

Engrish Funny

Schipul Marketing

Richland College

Telstra BigPond (Australian ISP)

Newspaper Direct

Perkler (Online Community for Loyalty and Rewards)

Nashville Lifestyles/The Tennessean

US Air Force

Zhiing (Social Navigation Application for Smartphones)

Filthy Farm Girl (Sells soap)
