Direct message (DM)

A DM, or direct message, is a private message sent on a social media platform like Instagram, Facebook, or X (formerly Twitter). DMs allow users to have one-on-one conversations that aren’t visible to the public.

People use DMs to ask questions, share information, or contact brands. Most platforms filter DMs from non-followers into a separate inbox, but users can change their settings to receive messages from anyone.

The phrase “DM me” means “send me a direct message.” The term started on Twitter and is now used across most social apps
