Instagram has increased the length of Reels to 90 seconds, users have announced on social media.
Previously, the short-form vertical videos only went up to 60 seconds long.
Instagram has yet to make an official statement. The platform has made clear, however, that they are looking to enhance the Reels experience for users in 2022. Just last month, Instagram introduced the option to create Reels from story highlights, and updates are expected to continue.
According to Instagram, Reels are the fastest-growing content format on both Instagram and Facebook and users on both platforms spend more than half their time watching videos.
While Reels, like competitor videos on TikTok started off as short, snappy videos, they have been gradually increasing in length. In July, for example, TikTok moved from 60-second videos up to three minutes and recently expanded to let users upload videos up to 10 minutes in length. It looks like Instagram is following TikTok’s lead in inching videos upward in length.
Aside from Reels, users can create longer-form videos via Instagram feed videos and Instagram Lives, which go up to 60 minutes and four hours, respectively.
