Instagram also says, “Sharing across formats (like Reels, Stories, Instagram Video, etc.) can help you find new followers and expand your reach.”
It’s interesting they don’t actually mention main feed photo posts at all here – likely because photo posts are the least likely to get your content in front of new eyeballs, since they’re limited to your followers with no native option to repost.
But the distinction between in-feed video and Reels looks to be in flux. Instagram is currently running a test where all Instagram videos become Reels for some users.
It’s more indication that Reels will be an increasingly important way to achieve Instagram growth moving forward. But for now, keep using a mix of formats with a focus on video.

Instagram’s in-feed recommendations (aka the Instagram algorithm) are based on a number of signals.
A simple one to focus on is “other people they follow.” Following and engaging with accounts in your niche will signal the algorithm that you’re part of that niche.
Focus on some quality engagement with high-value accounts in your field. If you can get their attention so that they follow you back, that’s an even greater signal to the algorithm that people who follow them might be interested in you, too.
Reels can bring new viewers your way, but it’s your job to turn them into long-term followers. Again Instagram weighs in: “The easiest way to turn casual followers into fans is by liking, replying, and resharing their responses.”
Engaging with your fans by responding to comments increases the odds that you will get even more comments. People are much more likely to engage with you if they can see that you’ve taken the time to respond to people who have commented before.
Get creative with the way you engage your audience. Questions stickers on Stories are a great way to get the conversation going while also providing the basis for new content.
And on Reels, you can even respond to comments with video replies.

Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post and 10 per story. But you probably don’t want to max out your hashtags very often.

Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters long, but you’re unlikely to need that many most of the time. If you have a really compelling story to tell, go ahead and tell it. But a short, snappy caption that makes effective use of emojis, keywords, and hashtags might work just as well.

Most important is to make sure your handle and Instagram profile name are relevant and clear, so that people who are specifically seeking you out on Instagram can find and follow you. If you can fit a relevant keyword into your handle or name, even better.
Keywords are also important in your bio. Use the 150 characters allotted for your bio to tell visitors what you and your brand are all about. This will help encourage new visitors to follow while also sending important ranking signals to the algorithm to get you in front of more potential fans.
Finally, add a location if that’s relevant to your business. This can help build your local following and make it easier for other local brands to find and connect with you, which benefits all the businesses in your community.
Working with Instagram creators can be an effective way to spread the word about your brand. It’s a way to get your name in front of a targeted, engaged audience while also uncovering new content ideas and opportunities.
Look for creators who align with your brand values and aesthetic. Again, social listening is a great tool.

But it’s impossible to revamp your entire social strategy every time there’s an update or algorithm change.
Instead, focus on creating great content that speaks to your audience and honors your brand values. It may not sound sexy, but it’s a surefire way to grow a loyal following over time.
Instagram has updated the algorithm to “prioritize distribution of original content in recommendations.” Original content means content you created or that has not been posted on the platform before. That means reposting UGC is great for social proof, but it is not likely to boost your content in recommendations.

The exception is when you add your own take through native features like Remix or Collabs. That counts as original content and is eligible for recommendation by the algorithm.
